Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. NCAT with a Comeback Win in Game Two

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (10-20, 5-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) swept the doubleheader Saturday against North Carolina A&T State University (7-31, 4-7 MEAC) at Lady Tiger Softball Field.
 
The Lady Tigers easily won the first game 7-0, but trailed the Aggies in game two 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  With only one hit prior to the seventh, the Lady Tigers recorded five hits and scored all five runs, including junior pinch hitter Peyton Mitchell's RBI single up the middle to win the game two, 5-4 to complete the comeback for the Lady Tigers.
 
Sophomore left fielder Shayna Byers, junior first baseman Elizabeth Humes and junior third baseman Cortni Jones each batted .500 (3-for-6), while Byers scored once with two RBIs, Humes scored twice with three RBIs and Jones scored twice with two RBIs in both games and senior center fielder Brianna Harris scored four times and batted .429 (3-for-7).

Humes and Byers each went 2-for-3, while Byers added two RBIs and Humes scored twice and recorded two RBIs and Harris went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.  On the mound, senior pitcher Amanda Hallman (7-9) picked up the win pitching a complete game scattering seven hits.
 
After back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the first inning, Harris singled on a bunt to third base and advanced to second on an error, while Jones reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners with two outs.
 
Humes delivered with a two-run double to score Harris and Jones for a 2-0 lead and Hallman walked and Byers singled to center field to drive home Humes and an error allowed Hallman to score for a 4-0 lead.  The inning ended with a strikeout.
 
The Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the third inning for a 6-0 lead after the third inning.  Harris started the inning with a single and pop out to second base for the first out.  Humes singled to left field and a fly out for the second out advanced both runners to second and third and Harris scored on the throw for a 5-0 lead.  Byers singled to center field to drive home Humes for a 6-0 lead, but a groundout ended the inning.
 
Savannah State scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning after Jones hit an RBI double to center field.
 
The Aggies were led by Zadia Davis went 2-for-4 and Zadaisha Waddell went 2-for-3, while on the Mohagony Headen (4-7) picked up the loss pitching the first three innings giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits.

Savannah State recorded six hits with senior right fielder Shelby Eccles, Harris, Jones, Humes Byers and Mitchell each recorded a hit, while Eccles, Harris, Jones, Humes and Byers each scored a run.  On the mound, junior pitcher Faith Dickerson (1-8) picked up the win in relief pitching the last two innings without giving up a hit.
 
NCAT scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead and scored two more runs in the fifth inning after a two-run single for a 3-0 lead.  The Aggies scored another run in the sixth inning after an RBI groundout for a 4-0 lead.
 
The Lady Tigers recorded the first hit in the sixth inning, but recorded five of the six hits in the seventh inning.  Eccles started the inning with a bunt single and senior shortstop Drea Lesure sacrificed Eccles to second.  Harris followed up with a single and advance to second on the throw to put runners on first and second with one out.
 
Jones hit an infield single to drive home Eccles to cut the lead to 4-1 and Humes singled to center field to drive home Harris and an error allowed Jones to score to cut the lead to 4-3 and Humes was thrown out at second on the play for the second out of the inning and bases cleared.

Hallman walked and Byers reached on an error and junior catcher Kelsey Cyrus walked to load the bases.  Mitchell, who came in as a pinch hitter, bounced a ball over the pitcher's head to send the ball to center field to score Byers for the game winner.
 
The Aggies were led by Nijah McCray going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Stephanie Williams went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while on the mound, Zadaisha Waddell (2-8) picked up the loss pitching a complete game giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits.
 
The Lady Tigers host the home finale Sunday for Senior Day Sunday at noon with the senior festivities starting at 11:40 a.m. at Lady Tiger Softball Field.
