DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State defeated North Carolina Central 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader at the Durham Athletic Park, thanks to the hitting of
Marcus Mitchell and the pitching of
Luis Torres-Lopez.
Mitchell went 3 for 4 at the pate with two RBI and scored one run while Torres-Lopez struck out five batters in his five innings on the mound.
The Tigers lost the first game 10-2.
In the second game, SSU (5-14,2-4 MEAC) raced out to a 5-0 lead with one run in the second inning and four more in the third.
Jalen Atterbury led off the second by being hit by a pitch and later scored on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Tigers left the bases loaded but not before collecting three hits and sending four runners across home plate.
Khalyd Cox and
Kyle Gerdts drew walks and
Freddie Landers singled to load the bases. A ground-out by Bryce Luke allowed Cox to score and singles by Atterbury and Mitchell brought home Gerdts and Landers. Atterbury scored when
Juan Lugo reached on a fielder's choice.
Mitchell extended Savannah State's lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. NCCU loaded the bases in their half of the fifth but could only push one run across home plate to prevent a shutout.
SSU had seven hits in the game and left eight runners on base.
Landers had two hits and Atterbury scored twice.
Zach Michalski had the only RBI for the Eagles in the fifth inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jake McCort was the losing pitcher for NCCU, giving up three runs and two walks in two innings.
The Eagles (18-8,6-3 MEAC) had four hits and left nine runners on base.
In the first game, North Carolina Central scored six times in the second inning and never looked back.
SSU was held hit-less until the top of the fourth when Cox hit a solo home run over the right field fence to cut their deficit to 6-1.
The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to increase their advantage to 8-1.
Atterbury reached base on an error to lead off the sixth and scored on a single by Gerdts to make the score 8-2.
NCCU added two runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Tigers had three hits, left two men on base and made one error in the game.
Caleb Hill suffered the loss on the mound. Hill pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three hits, five runs and three walks.
Michalski had two doubles for NCCU and drove in three runs. Jonathan Figueroa struck out 11 batters in his seven innings on the mound
The Eagles had 11 hits in the game, made one error and left 10 runners on base.
