Softball Wins Final Game of Series against BCU Sunday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Savannah State University softball team (6-13, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated Bethune-Cookman University (16-19, 2-1 MEAC) 4-1 in the final game of the three game series Sunday at Sunnyland Park.

Senior shortstop Drea Lesure went 2-for-3 with a run score, while pitcher Amanda Hallman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run score and on the mound, Hallman (4-7) picked up the win in a complete game giving up one run on eight hits.

Savannah State got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning after junior third baseman Cortni Jones led off the inning with a home run to center field, her second consecutive game with a home run, to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers scored three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.  Lesure started the inning with a single to center field and stole second, while a groundout to the short advanced Lesure to third with one out.  After Jones was hit by a pitch, she stole second and Hallman doubled down the left field line to drive home Jones and Lesure for a 3-0 lead.

After a flyout for the second out of the inning, sophomore left fielder Shayna Byers doubled to drive home Hallman for a 4-0 lead, but after a pitching change, a groundout ended the inning for SSU.

Bethune-Cookman scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the final deficit to three runs after an RBI infield single.

The Wildcats were led by Mariah Davis going 2-for-4 and Taylor Sherritt going 2-for-3 and on the mound, Alexis Bermudez (6-7) picked up the loss pitching the first 3.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits.

The Lady Tigers continue the six game roadstand with a trip to North Carolina for a three-game series against North Carolina Central University in Durham Friday and Saturday.
