COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman
Abbas Abbkar of the Savannah State University of men's track team set the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.52 to finish sixth in the event at the Gamecock Invitational Saturday.
Abbkar beat the previous record of 1:52.76 set by Tyrone McCoy at the Charlotte Invite on April 23, 2011.
The men's track team recorded five additional top-10 finishes. Abbkar finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:04.37, followed by freshman
Cameron Pack with a time of 4:07.54, while sophomore
Morgan Ellis-Foster finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.09. Savannah State 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore
Andre Houser-Cross, senior
Justin Leggett, sophomore
Donterious Copeland and sophomore
Nigel Brown finished eight with a time of 41.07, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Leggett, Brown, Ellis-Foster and junior
Malik Franklin finished seventh with a time of 3:15.06.
The men's field team recorded four top-10 finishes. Sophomore
LaRon James finished fourth in the long jump with a jump of 7.32 meters (24-0.25), while Franklin finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 14.95 meters (49-0.75), followed by junior
Robert Simmons' sixth place finish with a jump of 14.46 meters (47-5.25). Freshman Konin Assinzo finished ninth in the discus throw with a throw of 40.02 meters (131-3.75).

th place finish with a time of 1:07.62.
The women's field team recorded two top-15 finishes. Junior
Kourtney Sizemore finished 10
th in the pole vault with a distance of 3.00 meters (9-10) and sophomore
Faith Shears finished 14
th in the hammer throw with a throw of 43.45 meters (142-7).

th place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.97, followed by junior

th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.78. Houser-Cross finished 33
rd in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99 and finished 44
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 22.47, while Copeland finished 30
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.37.
Other women's track results include Quarterman's 28
th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.03, followed by William with a 30
th place finish with a time of 25.10, while freshman
Calita Wyatt finished 40
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.96.
Hammond finished 33rd in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.32, followed by freshman
Brenda Johnson's 35
th place finish with a time of 16.91 and Elmore's 37
th place finish with a time of 18.38.
The men's and women's track and field teams return to action Saturday for the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
