COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman
Abbas Abbkar of the Savannah State University men's track team won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.93 and freshman Faith Shears of the women's field team finished ninth in the discus throw with a throw of 36.80 meters (120-9) to set the school record in the event on Day Two of the Weems-Baskin Invitational Saturday.
Abbkar beat the previous record of 3:55.54 held by Robert Herbert set at the Clemson Classic on Feb. 25, 2005, while Shears beat the previous record of 36.78 meters (120-8) set by Alexandrea Childs set at the Carolina Cup on April 12, 2013.
The men's track team recorded four additional top-five finishes. Sophomore
Nigel Brown nearly missed on setting a school-record with a time of 20.93 in the 200-meter dash to finish second by 0.20 seconds, and finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.63. Senior
Justin Leggett finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.16 and sophomore
Morgan Ellis-Foster finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.76, nearly missing on setting a school-record by 0.05 seconds.
The men's field team record a top-five finish with junior
Malik Franklin finishing fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.65 meters.
The women's track team recorded four top-15 finishes. Savannah State 4x400-meter relay team of freshman
Jada Morgan, sophomore Tyneshia Quarterman, freshman
Cayla Williams and freshman Iycis Hammond finished ninth with a time of 3:57.17, while the 4x100-meter relay team of Morgan, Quarterman, Hammond and Williams finished 12
th with a time of 47.72.
Quarterman finished 11
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.62, while Hammond finished 13
th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.36.
Other men's track results include Abbkar's sixth place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.11, while freshman
Cameron Pack finished seventh in the 800-meter run B with a time of 2:00.48 and finished 10
th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:08.19. Leggett finished 11
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.42, followed by freshman
Javontee Brice's 14
th place finish with a time of 48.67.
Brice also finished 32
nd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.95, while Ellis-Foster finished 10
th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72, followed by freshman
Isaiah McKisson's 18
th place finish with a time of 14.90. McKisson also finished 24
th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.51.
Savannah State 4x100-meter relay team of Brice, Leggett, Franklin and Brown finished 10
th with a time of 41.74, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Brice, Ellis-Foster, Leggett and Brown finished 14
th with a time of 3:24.49.
Other women's track results include Williams' 28
th place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.44, while Quarterman finished 20
th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.50, followed by Morgan's 44
th place finish with a time of 25.46 and Williams' 45
th place finish with a time of 25.51.
Day two of the meet continues Saturday with the field events starting at 9 a.m. with the men's discus throw, women's shot put, men's and women's triple jump and women's high jump, while the track events start at 10 a.m. with the women's 1,500-meter run.
