GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior forward Kaylee Allen led the Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-8) with nine points and four rebounds, while the Lady Tigers fell to East Carolina University (7-5) 103-37 in Minges Coliseum.
Junior guard Donasja Scott added six points and four rebounds, while freshman forward Jalea Gray added five points and freshman center Sabree Gallishaw led the team with five rebounds.
After both teams scored a bucket to start the game for a tie at two with 9:08 remaining in the first quarter, East Carolina scored 16 of the next 18 points to take a 14-point lead, 18-4, with 5:19 left. The Lady Tigers scored the next five points to cut the lead to nine points, 18-9, with 2:37 left, but the Pirates scored nine of the final 11 points to increase their lead to 18 points, 29-11, after the first quarter.
East Carolina scored 17 of the first 21 points to start the second quarter to increase its lead to 30 points, 46-16, with 3:44 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored five of the next eight points to cut the lead to 28 points, 49-21, with 1:56 left. The Pirates scored the final seven points to take a 35-point, 56-21, halftime lead.
The Pirates scored 20 of the first 23 to increase their lead to 52 points, 76-24 with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to 47 points, 76-29, with 10 seconds left and an ECU three-pointer gave the Pirates a 50-point, 79-29, lead after the third quarter.
A Gray layup started the final quarter and cut the lead to 48 points, 79-31, with 9:34 remaining in the game, but ECU outscored the Lady Tigers 24-6 during the rest of the quarter for the 66-point win.
The Pirates were led by Ariyana Williams with 34 points and added five assists, while Necole Hope added 15 points and Alex Frazier led with 12 assists and added eight points.
The Lady Tigers travel to Jacksonville, Fla., after Christmas to face Jacksonville University Sunday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m.
