SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-6) trailed as much as 16 points to Jacksonville State University (5-4), but SSU's comeback bid fell short as the Gamecocks won 64-57 Saturday in Tiger Arena.
Jacksonville State led by 16 points, 32-16, with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored 23 of the next 28 points to take a two-point lead, 39-37, with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter, but JSU scored 27 of the final 45 points to capture the seven-point win.
Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and added four rebounds and three assists, while junior guard
Kierstan Green added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 10 minutes off the bench.
Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss added 10 points, while senior forward
Jeremica Edwards led the team with seven rebounds and with three steals and senior center
Caprisha Treadwell added six rebounds and three blocks.
Savannah State scored the first four points of the game to take a 4-0 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter, but Jacksonville State scored six of the next eight points to tie the game at six. After a jumper by Edwards to give the Lady Tigers a two-point lead, 8-6, with 4:19 left, the Gamecocks scored the final six points of the quarter to give JSU a four-point lead, 12-8, after the first quarter.
Jacksonville State scored 10 of the first 15 points in the second quarter to increase its lead to nine points, 22-13 remaining in the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to six points, 22-16, with 5:31 left in the first half. The Gamecocks scored the next 10 points to increase their lead to a game-high 16 points, 32-16, with 1:35 left, but SSU scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 12 points, 32-20, at the half.
Savannah State scored 19 of the first 24 points of the third quarter to take a two-point lead, 39-37, with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter, but Jacksonville State scored 10 of the final 12 points to take a six-point lead, 47-41, after three quarters.
The Lady Tigers scored seven of the first 10 points of the final quarter to cut the JSU's lead to two-points, 50-48, with 6:10 remaining in the fourth quarter and after both teams trading baskets to keep the JSU's lead at two, 52-50, with 3:30 remaining, Jacksonville State scored eight of the next 10 points to increase its lead to six points, 58-52, with 1:18 left. After a three-point play by Moss to cut the lead to three points, 58-55, with 1:06 remaining in the game, the Gamecocks scored six of the final eight points to win by seven points.
The Gamecocks were led by Briana Benson with 19 points and four steals, while Tyler Phelion added a double-double with 14 rebounds and 11 points and Ki-Ki Patterson added 12 points.
The Lady Tigers take a week off before traveling to Auburn, Ala., to face Southeastern Conference opponent of Auburn, Ala., Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. ET.
