Davis Set School Record as WBB Falls to No. 11 UW 87-36

SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior center Tiyonda Davis of the Savannah State University women's basketball recorded five blocks to set the school record in the Division I era as the Lady Tigers fell to No. 11 University of Washington 87-36 in Alaska Airlines Arena Sunday.

Davis has blocked 227 shots in her career, breaking Alisha Nelson's record of 223 career blocks from 2008-12.  The Athens, Ga., native also recorded nine rebounds and four points. 

Junior guard Deyja Brown led SSU with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from the 3-point line and added four rebounds, while senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added eight points and senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added six points, four rebounds and three rebounds.
 
Junior guard Lauryn Fields scored the first jumper to give SSU a 2-0 lead with 8:47 remaining in the first quarter, but Washington scored the next three points to take a point lead, 3-2, with 6:57 left.  A Davis layup gave the Lady Tigers a point lead, 4-3, with 5:51 remaining in the quarter, but Washington scored 18 of the next 22 points to take a 13-point lead, 21-8, after the first quarter.
 
A three-pointer by junior guard Kierstan Green cut the lead to 10 points, 21-11 with 9:01 remaining in the second quarter, but the Huskies scored 22 of the next 27 points to take a 27-point halftime lead.
 
Brown's three-point cut the lead to 24 points, 43-19, with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter, but Washington scored 13 of the next 16 points to increase its lead to 32 points, 56-24, with 6:53 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the next nine points to cut the lead to 25 points, 56-31, with 2:06 remaining, but Washington scored the last five points to increase its lead to 32 points, 63-31 after three quarters.
 
Two free throws by Shaw cut the lead to 30 points, 63-33, with 9:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Washington scored 24 of the final 27 points to capture the 51 point win. 
 
The Huskies were led by Kelsey Plum with 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, while Heather Corral added 15 points, Mai-Loni Henson added 11 points and seven rebounds and Hannah Johnson added nine rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers return home to face No. 6 University of South Carolina in Tiger Arena at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
