AUBURN, Ala. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-7) fell to Auburn University (7-2) 75-46 Sunday in Auburn Arena.
Senior guard
Rhianna Warren led SSU with nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from the 3-point line, while graduate student Lauren "Gaby" Moss and senior center
Tiyonda Davis each added seven points. Davis also added eight rebounds and two blocks, giving her 222 career blocks, two shy of setting the school record in the Division I era.
Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix added eight points and five rebounds top give her 983 career points, 17 points shy of 1,000, while senior forward
Jeremica Edwards added six points on 3-for-4 shooting with three rebounds.
Auburn scored the first six points of the game to capture a 6-0 lead with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter, but a Hendrix layup got SSU on the board and to cut the lead to four points, 6-2. AU scored 14 of the next 18 points to increase its lead to 14 points, 20-6, with 48 second left, but an Edwards layup cut the lead to 14 points, 20-8, after the first quarter.
AU scored 11 of the first 16 points of the second quarter to increase its lead to 18 points, 31-13, with 7:29 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 11 points, 31-20, with 4:53 remaining in the first half. Auburn scored 12 of the next 18 points to increase its lead to 17 points, 43-26, with four second left, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Warren cut the lead to 14 points, 43-29, at the half.
Auburn scored nine of the first 11 points of the third quarter to increase its lead to 21 points, 52-31, with 5:00 minutes left in the quarter, but two free throws by Davis cut the lead to 19 points, 52-33, with 3:59 left. AU scored eight of the final 12 points to increase its lead to 23 points, 60-37, after three quarters.
AU scored nine of the first 11 points in the final quarter to increase its lead to 30, 69-39, with 4:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, but a jumper by junior
Kierstan Green and a three-pointer by junior guard
Lauryn Fields cut the lead to 27 points, 69-42, with 3:27 left. Auburn pushed its lead to 31 points by scoring the next four points, 73-42, with 2:35 remaining in game, but a free throw by Moss and a three-pointer by Hendrix cut the lead to 28 points, 73-46, with 1:20 left. An Auburn jumper with 58 seconds gave Auburn the 29-point win.
The Tigers were led by Brandy Montgomery with 22 points and five rebounds, while Tiffany Lewis added 12 points, Katie Frerking added nine points and five rebounds and Janiah McKay added seven points and eight assists.
The Lady Tigers take a week-off before traveling to Seattle, Wash., to face the University of Washington Sunday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. ET.
