Caprisha Treadwell and senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix combined for 27 points as Savannah State University women's basketball team (2-3) fell to Kennesaw State University (1-4) 72-60 in KSU Convocation Center Saturday.
Treadwell led the Lady Tigers with a career-high 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor and added five rebounds in 14 minutes, while Hendrix added 13 points and three rebounds. Hendrix went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line to give her 153 career 3-pointers to tie the school record in the Division I era with Ezinne Kalu.
Senior forward
Jeremica Edwards led the team with six rebounds and added six points and two steals, while
Tiyonda Davis added seven points, three rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
Kennesaw State scored seven of the first nine points to take a five-point lead, 7-2, with 8:24 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State scored the next five points to tie the game at seven with 7:03 left. After a KSU three-pointer to take a three-point lead, 10-7, with 6:47 remaining, the Lady Tigers scored the next seven points to take a four-point lead, 14-10, with 3:12 left in the quarter. KSU scored 11 of the final 15 points to take a three-point lead, 21-18, after one quarter.
The Owls scored six of the first seven points in the second quarter to take an eight-point lead, 27-19, with 7:23 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next eight points to tie the game at 27 with 4:26 remaining in the first half, forcing a Kennesaw State timeout. After the timeout, KSU scored nine of the final 11 points to take a nine-point, 38-29, halftime lead.
After a KSU layup to increase its lead to 11 points, 40-29, with 8:47 remaining in the third quarter, Savannah State scored the next five points to cut the lead to six points, 40-34, with 7:25 remaining. Kennesaw State scored 13 of the final 19 points to extend its lead to 13 points, 53-40, after three quarters.
Kennesaw State scored five of the first seven points in the final quarter to extend its lead to 16 points, 58-42, with 6:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Savannah State scored nine of the next 11 points to cut the lead to nine points, 60-51, with 3:33 left in the game. The Owls scored seven of the next nine points to take a 14-point lead, 67-53, with 1:48 to go, but back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore guard
Deyja Brown and senior guard
Rhianna Warren cut the lead to eight points, 67-59. KSU scored five of the final six points to capture the 12-point win.
The Owls were led by Allison Johnson with a double-double of 16 rebounds and 15 points, while Deandrea Sawyers added 16 points and six rebounds, Iceis Walker added 11 points and four rebounds and Deja McPhee added nine points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Tigers start a three-game homestand with Jacksonville University Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
