Volleyball Drops MEAC Openers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State volleyball team opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition this weekend in a two-game Florida swing.

The Lady Tigers opened the weekend Friday night against Florida A&M in Tallahassee. SSU fell in straight sets to the reigning MEAC Southern Division Champions.  

SSU dropped the match 11-25, 6-25, and 13-25. Newcomer Zariya Thomas led the Lady Tigers with five kills. Elexius Harris led in digs with six. Pamela Soriano led the Lady Rattlers with 12 kills, while Joanie Del Castillo led in digs with 10.

On Sunday, SSU left the panhandle for the east coast of Florida and a MEAC match with Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach.

The Lady Tigers fell in straight sets to the Lady Wildcats. SSU fell 15-25 in the first set, and 16-25 in the second set. The Lady Wildcats sealed up their second MEAC win of the season with a 25-12 third set win.

Thomas again led the Lady Tigers with eight kills. Caitlynn Masoe added five kills. Alexis Washington led SSU with 11 digs. Delicia Pierre led BCU with 10 kills, while Normaire Rolon led in digs with 19.

The Lady Tigers return home on Tuesday with a nonconference match against Charleston Southern. On Friday they host S.C. State University in their first MEAC home game. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym and are free to the public.
