Volleyball Drops Home Match To Charleston Southern

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Without their top player, the Savannah State Volleyball squad still made a consorted effort against Charleston Southern in a 0-3 loss at Willcox-Wiley Gym on Tuesday night.
 
Out of the gate the Lady Bucs took control with a 4-0 run to open the first set. SSU fired back with a 7-0 run on six straight service points from Olivia Wasdin and kills from Miyah Davis and Gabrielle Nathaniel.
 
SSU held onto their lead as teams traded kill for kill. Charleston Southern then knotted the game up at 10 on kills from Siraya Windsor and Katrina Houston.
 
Out of a timeout, the Lady Bucs regained the lead with back-to-back kills from Houston. SSU responded with a kill from newcomer Jademone Jones.
 
A kill from Nathaniel knotted the score up at 13. The Lady Bucs then pushed out to an 18-14 lead with a 5-1 run behind kills from Meredith Parrott, Houston and a service ace from Windsor.
 
Behind a kill from Alexis Washington and a service ace from Wasdin SSU cut the Lady Bucs' lead to 19-16, but CSU responded, taking a 24-18 lead a little later. Charleston Southern won the set, 25-18, on an attack error from SSU.
 
The Lady Tigers came out firing in the second set with a 4-1 run to open the game, but the Lady Bucs' retorted with a 4-0 run, and on a service error from CSU the match was tied up at 5 all.
 
Charleston Southern then leaped out to a 13-6 lead behind an 8-1 run, regaining a lead they would not relinquish. Later, CSU went up 20-10 on two costly SSU errors, forcing the Lady Tigers to take a timeout.
 
Shortly after the pause, the Lady Bucs went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-12 win.
 
It was all Charleston Southern in the third and final set. The Lady Bucs' cruised through most of the set going up 23-9 late. The Lady Tigers kept fighting with kills from Elexius Harris and a service ace from Autumn Session, but a kill from Houston sealed up the 25-13 set win and a 3-0 match win for the visitors.
 
Harris and Caitlynn Masoe led the Lady Tigers with five kills apiece. Washington led SSU in digs with 10. Parrott and Houston led the visitors with 11 kills apiece.
 
SSU played without outside hitter Justice Dilworth, the team's statistical leader. Dilworth suffered a concussion against Florida A&M this past weekend. An expected return date is unclear.
 
The Lady Tigers host South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match on Friday, October 3 in Willcox-Wiley.
