Women's Basketball Opens The 2013-14 Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's basketball team will open the 2013-14 campaign this week. After a preseason exhibition win, the new Lady Tigers are looking deep with talent and ripe for a comeback season.

After losing their point guard, Ezinne Kalu, early in the 2012-13 season, SSU struggled to find a rhythm, finishing the season with a 7-23 overall record. In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), SSU went 2-14.

Kalu recovered from a knee injury and has returned to lead the Lady Tigers once again. In an exhibition game with cross-town rival Armstrong Atlantic State on Halloween night, Kalu led the field with 24 points, helping her team to a 73-62 victory in the "Battle By The Marsh".

SSU gained important depth with the return of Zadous Pollard and the advent of five newcomers. Sharing point guard duties with Kalu this season will be transfer Bria Dorsey. The 5-7 junior from Atlanta, Ga., put up 10 points in the Lady Tigers win over AASU.

Kenyata Hendrix, a freshman out of Carrollton, Ga., scored 11 points in the Lady Tigers exhibition win. Freshman Tiyonda Davis, a 6-2 center, led the field in rebounds with 13 against Armstrong Atlantic.

Of this year's 14-person squad, nine are returners. Other vital returners for the Lady Tigers are Jasmine Norman, Jazmin Thomas, Charmaine Greene and Shawanda Hanton.  

Greene was named to the All-MEAC Preseason Third Team in a press release by the conference on Monday, November 4. The Lady Tigers were voted to finish in 12th place overall in the same polling's. The poll is voted on by head coaches and sports information directors in the conference.

Hampton University was slated to win the conference. North Carolina A&T was voted as number two, followed by Coppin State , Florida A&M, Howard, Morgan State, South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman, Maryland Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Norfolk State, and finally, North Carolina Central in 13th place.

Florida A&M's Jasmine Grice and Hampton's Alyssa Bennett garnered Co-Preseason Player of the Year accolades.

Head coach Cedric Baker enters his 11th season at Savannah State, and his 21st year of collegiate coaching. Baker is flirting with a milestone 300 career wins this season. He has an overall record of 286-310 and a 92-195 record at SSU.

SSU opens the season at home on November 8 with a visit from Columbia College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers open the road schedule at the Athletics in Action Classic in Waco, Texas on November 21. They will try and quell a 13 road game losing streak. The tournament is hosted by perennial women's basketball program Baylor University.
