SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State football team wrapped by up spring practice with the annual Orange and Blue scrimmage game which pitted the offense against the defense at the SSU practice field.
The scrimmage lasted about 45 minutes.
The scrimmage drew campus administrators, faculty, staff, students as well as alumni, boosters, family and friends. Also on hand were former players and coaches.
Head coach Steve Davenport was pleased with the effort by both units but said the team still has a long way to go in order to be ready to play Albany State on September 3.
“I was disappointed in the offense but pleased with the defense,” stated Davenport. “The defense was really good. We will get back in the weight room on Monday.”
Despite being harassed by Sand Gnats throughout the scrimmage, the offense was able to move the ball. Running backs
Justin Babb and
Sheldon Barnes had some good runs while quarterback AJ Defilippis had a couple of deep throws. Wideout Brain Lackey also caught a few passes.
Babb scored on a short run, Barnes caught a touchdown and
Derek Williams kicked a field goal.
The defense pressured the offense as much as the sand gnats were to the fans.
Leading the way was defensive back
Chris Asbury, who returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown.
Asbury thought the team improved during the practices.
“The spring went great,” said Asbury. "Entering spring practice we didn't know what to expect but once we got down the schemes we got better."
The rising senior from Fayetteville, Georgia is also excited about the upcoming season.
“The defense will be better as well as the whole team.”
When asked if he had any goals, he replied “my goal is to be All-MEAC.”
