SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State interim head football coach Julius Dixon has announced the hiring of three new assistant coaches.
Carl L. Funderburk will serve as the offensive line coach, Corey G. McCloud will work with the defensive line and Dwayne Curry will coach the linebackers.
Funderburk spent last season coaching the offensive line at Winston-Salem State, McCloud spent the past two seasons as defensive line / strength & conditioning coach at Livingstone and Curry spent last season as defensive line coach and physical education instructor at Hinds Community College.
Before working at Winston-Salem State, Funderburk coached seven years at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. where he served as the offensive line coach and travel coordinator for seven seasons. While at Methodist he was responsible for the implementation of winning run and pass blocking schemes.
Prior to coaching at Methodist, he spent three years at Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he served as the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.
Previous to his coaching at Bacone College, Funderburk served as the offensive line coach at Kemper Military Junior College in Booneville, Missouri for two seasons (1989-99).
A 1989 graduate of Elon University, Funderburk served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal and Squad Leader from 1980-1983.
McCloud is no stranger to SSU having coached the Tigers defensive line in 2007.
Before coming to SSU, McCloud was an assistant on the high school level, working at Westlake High School in Atlanta, Ga. (2005-07); Walker Senior High School in New Orleans, LA (2001-05); and Reed Senior High School in New Orleans (2000-01).
McCloud was a four year letterman, playing outside linebacker at Nicholls State from 1994-97. He was All Southland Conference in 1997 and was honorable mention in 1995 and 1996.
McCloud received a bachelor's degree in business management from New Orleans in 1999.
Curry is a 1997 graduate of Mississippi State, earning a B.S. degree in physical education and fitness management.
As a player at Mississippi State from 1993-96, Curry, was a three-time Butkus Award Candidate. He was also a two-time Consensus All-American, and an Honorable Mention All-American at linebacker one season. He started 34 of 41 games for the Bulldogs, finishing his career with 391 tackles, 14 ½ tackles for loss and four interceptions.
Before working at Hinds, Curry was the defensive line coach and summer camps coordinator at Birmingham Southern College (2008-09). He was the defensive line and special teams coach at East Mississippi Community College from 2007-08 prior to going to BSC.
Curry started his coaching career as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Southside High School in Atlanta, Ga., where spent from 1999-2001. Curry moved on to be the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Pensacola High School in Pensacola, Fla., from 2004-06 before stepping into the college ranks as linebackers coach at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas (2006-07).
